Coronavirus: la emergencia sanitaria redefine el trabajo remoto

Como consecuencia del coronavirus, "China podría perder un punto de su PIB en año pleno y retiraría mecánicamente 0,4 puntos del PIB mundial", afirmó Michala Marcussen, jefa economista de Société Générale. El freno forzoso impactaría no sólo en la producción del gigante asiático sino también en su demanda, afectando a los países productores de materia prima, como Chile y Australia.

El coronavirus se propaga hasta una distancia de dos metros de la persona infectada. Como todos los virus respiratorios, viajan por el aire en gotitas mínimas que despide la persona infectada cuando habla, respira, tose o estornuda. Aunque no son tan poderosos como el virus del sarampión (que tiene 30 metros de alcance), este nuevo brote de coronavirus en China demanda medidas radicales y urgentes.

La ciudad de Hong Kong les pidió a todos los empleados del sector privado que trabajen desde sus casas. La medida se extiende también a esta semana y probablemente se renueve, a la espera de nuevas estadísticas. El sello escala a nivel nacional, porque Starbucks, KFC, Pizza Hut y la empresa de co-working WeWork anunciaron que cerrarán sus oficinas locales en China temporariamente. Los empleados de Facebook basados en China, y todos aquellos que viajaron recientemente al gigante asiático, también van a trabajar desde casa por pedido de la empresa.

No se trata de propagar el pánico como el virus, sino de hacer todo lo que está al alcance para controlarlo y por eso están cerradas al público también las oficinas gubernamentales, museos, librerías, estadios y otros lugares que conglomeran.

“Esta nueva emergencia sanitaria de alcance todavía incierto redefine el trabajo remoto. Si hasta hoy lo promocionábamos como la modalidad flexible y eficiente que eligen las compañías y los trabajadores del futuro, hoy se ha vuelto un imperativo mundial a causa de esta emergencia sanitaria” afirma Alex Konanykhin, CEO de TransparentBusiness.

TransparentBusiness es plataforma SaaS para la coordinación y gestión de equipos geográficamente distribuidos de manera transparente y efectiva y con el fin de apoyar a contener la pandemia, decidimos donar un millón de dólares a China en licencias para el trabajo remoto.

La donación hace posible que millones de chinos trabajen desde sus casas de manera segura y sin correr los riesgos del contagio, y ayudará a contrarrestar el impacto devastador que podría tener para la economía nacional, y mundial, el cese de todas las actividades productivas por tiempo indeterminado.

“Es una oportunidad para probar el teletrabajo a escala”, dijo Alvin Foo, Director Ejecutivo de Reprise Digital, una agencia de publicidad con base en Shanghai que tiene 400 empleados. “Claro que no va a ser fácil para una agencia creativa, que hace mucho brainstorming cara a cara. Va a demandar muchos video chats y llamadas”, dijo.

Aunque algunos CEOs están preocupados por el impacto que tendrán estas medidas en la productividad de sus empresas, un estudio publicado en 2015 por Stanford University dejó demostrado que la productividad de los empleados de la agencia de viaje china Ctrip subió 13% cuando trabajaban desde su casa: por un lado, porque interrumpían menos su trabajo, y se enfermaban menos, pero también porque atendían más llamadas por minuto, porque lo hacían desde el espacio confortable y menos poblado de sus casas.

El teletrabajo, además, permite a las compañías ahorrar miles de dólares en infraestructura e implica menos impacto en el medio ambiente y menos tiempo de traslados para los empleados. Además, los avances tecnológicos permiten monitorear el trabajo remoto, evaluando el tiempo real el progreso realizado.

Mientras esperamos que este nuevo brote de coronavirus termine lo antes posible, confiamos en que la modalidad del trabajo remoto ayudará a mitigar el impacto de la epidemia en la economía china y mundial. Y esto vale tanto para enfrentar este problema en particular como para anticipar el futuro del trabajo en general.
