Twitter trajo el futuro del trabajo remoto hoy y este cambio es para siempre.

La transformación digital en el mercado laboral que impuso COVID19 llegó para quedarse y convirtió al home-office en el nuevo rey de la productividad y la continuidad de los negocios.

Mientras Estados Unidos empieza lentamente a reabrir su economía, en el estado de California, donde tienen base las empresas proa de corazón tecnológico, como Twitter, Facebook y Google, se están tomando decisiones que definen la vanguardia del trabajo post COVID-19. Es este el fin del trabajo tal y como lo conocimos?

Jack Dorsey, el CEO de Twitter anunció que la compañía autorizará a sus empleados a trabajar de manera remota en forma indefinida y que cancelará los eventos presenciales programados para lo que queda de 2020, mientras define la agenda del año que viene. Con la velocidad de un pájaro, Twitter se anticipa a las nuevas regulaciones que va a demandar la implementación masiva del trabajo remoto y ofrece a sus empleados una asignación extra de U$ 1000 para los gastos que implica trabajar desde sus casas.

A esta altura de los acontecimientos, no quedan dudas de que COVID-19 es el gran acelerador de la transformación tecnológica a la que indefectiblemente nos encaminamos todos, aunque tal vez más despacio. La pandemia es una prueba de fuego para el mundo corporativo, que se adapta veloz a una escena tan universal como el alcance del virus, que no respeta fronteras, ni límites, ni paredes de oficinas.

Forzosamente quedarán en el pasado las relaciones laborales que se definen en el cara a cara y los CEOs que fundaban la jerarquía en el seguimiento presencial - cuerpo a cuerpo de sus empleados - están rápidamente virando su atención a los procesos en lugar de controlar a las personas.

Una encuesta de Gartner revela que COVID-19 puso a los empleados a considerar formas de trabajar que antes no imaginaban. “Mientras 30% de los empleados encuestados ya trabajaban parcialmente de manera remota antes de la pandemia, el análisis revela que, en el escenario post-pandemia, será un 41% de empleados los que van a adoptarán la modalidad.”

Por otro lado, los CFOs y líderes de finanzas encuestados en marzo por Gartner, 74% declararon que planean mover al menos al 5% de su fuerza laboral a posiciones remotas, aún cuando se levanten las restricciones y se habilite el transporte público.

Para plegarnos a la nueva normalidad, urge vencer nuestras propias limitaciones. En favor de un mundo laboral más eficiente y más ágil, es importante aprender nuevos procesos de operación concebidos tecnológicamente. En este momento, todos al mismo tiempo estamos siendo testigos de que el trabajo remoto, cuando se hace digitalizado y transparente, aumenta los niveles de productividad, permite operar con horarios flexibles, garantiza el acceso a la información que se almacena en la nube desde cualquier lugar y permite llevar control de los procesos con datos y eficiencia.

En su comunicado, Jack Dorsey aclaró que esta medida no quiere decir que Twitter vaya a cerrar sus oficinas permanentemente. Aquellos empleados cuyas funciones requieren de su presencia van a tener que seguir yendo.

Y, para otros que prefieran volver a la oficina, al menos temporariamente, el nido va a estar siempre abierto. Aunque hoy, a todos, Twitter les dio alas.
